General Discussion / Re: Welcome aboard!
« Last post by RecklessPrudence on June 13, 2014, 10:05:39 pm »
Hello! And to all you from the old 'Nutboard, waybackwhen, I was Psystorm, a name that considering it was an X-Men board led many to believe that I was either female or a hormonal male choosing my name from Psylocke and Storm. Not, as was the case, a username chosen for a Pokemon board that I just used on other boards.

And now, with RecklessPrudence, I'm continuing the proud tradition of accidentally choosing screennames that have lead people to assume I'm female! ("Prudence" being a popular feminine name in some parts of the english-speaking world, but not my portion).

I like it :D

The original prompted story is still there, BTW - just WAAAAAYYYYYY back in the archives where it's hellfuck hard to find.

This is why I figured One Year of Instants would be a good idea in the first place :)

So, way back when, I sent in a prompt. It ended up being Daily Fic #99. I did a quick Google Search, and I think 'Nutter took it off her blog when she compiled "One Year Of Instants", but here's the prompt:

Quote
I’ve actually already written a little snippet for this, but I’d like to see what you do. First Contact scenario with an explorator ship, and a bridge officer says to Captain James, completely seriously, “It’s life Jim, but not as we know it”. Cue laughing and singing from someone else on the bridge, a classic sci-fi and filk fan, just as the first audio transmissions between the two species start.

And here, much later, is my little snippet that I wrote before I submitted it.

---

This was finally it. Humanity's First Contact scenario. Not a tramp freighter, not a scam, not an on-location movie shoot. And they were the ones to encounter it. She turned to Captain James and said, seriously, "It's life Jim, but not as we know it."

The jump pilot, who everyone knew was a classic sci-fi and filk buff doubled over laughing and, not-so-sotto-voice, started singing a bizarre song, to the consternation of everyone else on the bridge.

It was agreed later that it was lucky explorator ships were more informal than most. And that it took awhile before the translation programs on either species' ships were up to telling the aliens what those first few seconds of audio contact meant. And that the pilot was stopped before he got to Captain Kirk’s lines

Especially Captain Kirk’s lines.

---

What do you guys think? I know it's not up to 'Nutter's standards, but for something I typed in a frenzy all at once when I was supposed to be doing something else (come to think of it, that's how most of my stories are written...), I think it's not too bad.

Feel free to advertise though :D

I want to have some activity on this board and I'm pondering having an RP session here.

Set in the 100% fictional environment of the Walter Robotics Home for Lost, Abandoned, and Broken Robots. Which I fully expect to branch out to various places, real and imaginary, in the San Diego area. Including Walter Manor and Kazooland.

You can bust out your OC's or variants of the canonical characters [Eg: If you're playing Ballerina!Spine, make sure you reference that character thusly.] While the cannon characters are NPC's and controlled on need.

And because I have no control over who views this, the RP has to be PG. Yes, sex will be yadda-yadda'd. At least until I figure out how to do spoiler control [HALP! IDK how these forums work!]. Likewise gore and gore-variants.

I, of course, will be RPing my fanbot. Bitzer [Her story here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1225480]. If it goes ahead.

Who's in?

SKIP Revamped: The Case of the Alliterative Arsonist

The nice thing about London, the really nice thing about it, was that money got you into places and gained you things one would otherwise not believe.

The other nice thing was that, should one look hard enough, one could get others to pay you to do anything.

For example, a Kosher Butcher's a mere hop skip and a jump away from Arthur D'Raigun's original and masochistic choice of residence actually paid Arthur to 'dispose' of the blood they could not, by faith, be allowed to touch. He got paid in pounds to hire some clean gentlemen for pennies to pump the blood into kegs and deliver them to a much better address.

An address conveniently close to a theatre he now owned. A theatre who now had a permanent place for Mesi to act -or dance- or sing as prima diva. A theatre where the managers assumptions about audience tastes were repeatedly and vastly proven wrong.

M'me Mesi Bolidé was making her mark. In more ways than one.

Every day, Arthur would read the higher class of newspapers and neatly circle anything that looked... interesting. And Mesi would go through the -ah- tawdrier publications, and do likewise.

They had both learned that their most interesting and profitable cases were the ones that matched up in both.

Mesi was the one who noticed about the fires. Arnham's in Abbotsford Avenue. A butcher's in Babel Place Borough. A Crafthouse in Cabal Cottages, Camberwell. The list went on all the way to the F's. The fires all began mysteriously when nobody should have been present. All the establishments were well guarded and there was no one beneficiary from the insurance.

Nobody saw anyone suspicious.

And the real advantage for their supplementary income was that the arsonist worked at night. Which meant that Arthur could join her on her investigations without raising any eyebrows.

It wasn't normally done for a gentleman to stroll the streets under the shade of a parasol. And all attempts to conceal him thusly as a lady were... laughable.

Mesi checked her maps and found what she believed to be the arsonist's next target.

Gainsborough Gardens, Golders Green.

The miscreant would not be able to stay away from such a place. Their next trouble was, of course, figuring out the criminals' actual target.

[AN: My problem with this, of course, is that I wouldn't know the layout of London from a length of lacrimosial licks. I'm trapped in Australia and it would be SO much easier on me if I set it in an unnamed pseudolondon, BUT, ModMad owns it and she says London, so... meeeeeehhhh. All alliterative alphabetical targets are appreciated.]
